A sheriff’s department that has publicly claimed to have eliminated racial bias in its policing practices continues to show significant racial disparities in stops, searches and arrests, according to an analysis of the department’s own data.

The analysis found that Black and Hispanic residents in the jurisdiction were stopped and searched at meaningfully higher rates than white residents, even accounting for population differences, a pattern consistent with disparities documented in law enforcement agencies nationwide despite various reform efforts.

Department officials have defended their reform efforts and disputed characterizations of the data. Community advocates have called for independent oversight of the department’s data going forward.
